A versatile guard and forward, Sy was drafted by the Hawks as the 53rd overall selection at the end of round two of the NBA draft following five seasons at STB Le Havre.
Sy began his debut season with an injury-prone season and suffered an Achilles injury in the summer league. Sy was unable to attend the entirety of the training camp due to an injury to his back. He was as injured for the initial eight games in the season prior to being cleared to play. On December 27, 2010 Sy was sent to the Hawks were able to send Sy on a trip to Utah Flash of the NBA Development League.

Pape Sy was born Loudeac, a town of a few hundred inhabitants located in northern France to an Senegalese family. He began playing basketball at a local club. Sy then moved from Massy before joining the Le Havre’s youth group in 2004 when he was 16. As a player with Le Havre in France, Sy was recruited by University of Wyoming men’s basketball coach Fred Langley.
Sy was signed to in the French squad STB Le Havre in 2005. From 2009 to 2010, his final season playing for Le Havre, Sy averaged 5.2 points, 1.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists in just 14 minutes in a game.
Sy paid his own way to come to the United States to showcase his talent for NBA teams.
