Patrick James Lynch (born 2 March 1962) popularly referred to under the name P. J. Lynch is an Irish artist and illustrator of children’s books. Lynch was awarded both the 1997 and 1995 Kate Greenaway Awards from the British Library Association awarding the best children’s book of the year illustration by an British subject.

He received his third Greenaway Medal two years later to illustrate the story of Jessie Came Across the Sea by Amy Hest (1997). Nobody has ever won three Greenaway Medals.

In 2006 Lynch completed work on two large scale murals in oils on the theme of Gulliver’s Travels for the new Cavan County Library.

He was one of many illustrators who contributed to An ABC Picture Gallery, a collaborative alphabet book written by the Dyslexia Institute staff (Oxford: Butterworth–Heinemann, 1999; ISBN 9780434804726) — “a full page illustration for each letter of the alphabet from some of the illustrators of today” with text insights about their work.

Lynch was born in Belfast, Lynch was the youngest of five children. He was fascinated by art since a young age, and often chose to spend his time in classes in art departments. He relates the time when Belfast at the time of the 1970s seemed to be one of the most “scary” place for a teenager. He resorted to the arts and literature as an “way of escaping for a while from the horrors that were happening around me in the real world.” He was a student at his first class at the Brighton College of Art and left in 1984 to start writing children’s books.

The first book he illustrated is A Bag of Moonshine by Alan Garner (1986), an assortment of folklore stories of England as well as Wales. In recognition of his work, he was awarded the Mother Goose Award, given to the “most exciting newcomer to British children’s book illustration”. Since then folklore–traditional stories, legends, and fairy tales–has been a recurring subject of his work.

Lynch and his wife Barbara were married in 2002 on his fortieth birthday. As of 2007 they live in Dublin with their two sons and daughter.
