Otis Lee Birdsong (born December 9th 1955) is an American former professional basketball player. He played for 12 season (1977-1989) playing in the NBA and was a part of all four NBA All-Star Games.
A 6’3” (1.91 meters) guard who played at Winter Haven High School and the University of Houston, Birdsong was chosen for the Kansas City Kings with the second selection of the 1977 NBA draft. He spent 4 seasons playing for the Kings with a mean of an all-time high of 24.6 minutes per game in 1981-82 season. He also spent in seven years with the New Jersey Nets and one with the Boston Celtics, and then finished his career at close of the 1988-89 campaign.
On October 20, 2014, in Fort Worth, Texas, Birdsong was inducted into the Southwest Conference Hall of Fame (presented by the Texas Sports Hall of Fame).
When he was a freshman at college, Birdsong finished third among the team’s top scorers by scoring 14.3 scores per match. In the next one year Birdsong established his place in record books of the University of Houston’s books as one of the few sophomores in school’s history to record 1,000 points in his career. When the Cougars started playing in the Southwest Conference, Birdsong soon established himself as the top scorer in the history of the league. The first year he was an SWC player, Birdsong led the league in scoring, finishing 8th in the nation with an average of 26.1 average. Birdsong was awarded the 1977 Consensus All-American and Southwest Conference Player of the Year for his team’s success in leading Houston’s Houston Cougars to a 29-8 record, and also playing in the National Invitational Tournament championship game against St. Bonaventure. Birdsong had 38 points in the game and hit 18 free throws in the game against the Bonnies but Houston was unable to win. He was fourth nationally in scoring and also set the SWC record by scoring 30.3 scores per contest. His achievements led to Birdsong receiving the distinction of SWC player of the Decade.

In addition to being awarded All-American distinction, Birdsong was named to the All-Southwest Conference team in 1976 and 1977. In addition, he was selected as District VI Player of the Year (encompassing Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas) by the United States Basketball Writers Association. He was on the USBWA’s All-District VI Team in 1975 1976, 1977 and 1975, and was captain in both his junior and senior seasons. In the four seasons he played for the Cougars team, they posted a an 79-38 record. He quit his position at the University of Houston as the most prolific scorer in the school’s history, second only to Larry Bird with 2,832 total career college points. He is currently 12th in all-time scoring for Division I men’s basketball, just ahead of Larry Bird and ahead of well-known names like David Robinson, Lew Alcindor, Calvin Murphy and Elgin Baylor.
After finishing his studies in the University of Houston, Birdsong was selected as the second player for the 1977 NBA draft, when he was picked to the Kansas City Kings. Birdsong scored more than 12,000 points in his career, and averaged 19 points/game during 12 seasons with the Kings, New Jersey Nets and Boston Celtics. Birdsong was a participant for the four NBA All-Star Games. He was part of the All-NBA Second Team in 1981.
In 2000, Birdsong was inducted in the University of Houston’s Hall of Honor as well as the Polk County, Florida Hall of Fame. In 2006, he was inducted into the Florida High School Hall of fame.
