Gallery ZURAG, founded in 2010 by the artist Otgonbayar Ershuu is situated in the heart of Berlin one of the most vibrant art capitals. It’s the first gallery established and run by an Mongol out of Mongolia. The gallery’s name is a reflection of its philosophy: the Mongolian phrase ZURAG (Mongolian: ZURAG ) is a reference to image, painting drawing, photograph, and representation. In short, it promotes the expression of different ways. ZURAG Gallery aims to become more than an exhibition space. It strives to become a center that fosters exchange between artists and cultural institutions that will help to improve the perception of Mongolian culture is enhanced.

One of the longtime works of Otgonbayar Ershuu has been his “Secret History of the Mongols – related in the style of Mongolian painting as a comic.” This comic consists of about 600 pages, which are divided into 12 chapters. Each page features several pictures amounting to a work of about altogether 3000 drawings. The “Secret History of the Mongols” was written about 800 years ago and is considered the oldest and most significant Mongolian work of literature – as myth, epos and chronic all at once. It did not contain any illustrations originally. In order to make this history more comprehensive and interesting for all ages, Ershuu decided to transform the content of this significant work into Mongolian miniature painting. The idea emerged from his belief that the viewing of images is often easier than reading. One of his main concerns during the development of the comic was to portray ethnic features of the Mongols as well as historical facts and artifacts as precisely and genuine as possible. Therefore, he had to pursue extensive researches which led him into various academic areas. By including miniature painting in his work he intended to capture something characteristically and traditionally Mongolian.

He grew up with seven siblings and one adopted brother. He was enthralled by art since early years. The talent he had was discovered and at the age of 15 he was exhibiting an exhibition of his own. Between 1996 and 1998, Otgonbayar took classes in “traditional Mongolian painting” in Ulan Bator and received his diploma as an artist. Being deeply connected to his country of birth and Mongolia, he set out to study the art in Mongolian miniature paintings. However, there was no formal course on this topic which is why he learned the ability over a six-year period of self-study. Between between 1998 and 2004, Otgonbayar traveled to Mongolia’s historical sites and participated in a variety of social and cultural initiatives. In the course of his studies, he painted around 400 photographs. After his studies , he was involved in several trips to historical places in Mongolia as an artist and conservator. Otgonbayar has studied various methods and iconography used in the miniature paintings and their spiritual background at Buddhist and Lamaist monasteries. He has been a freelance artist since 1998. In addition to his own artworks, he’s also produced about 600 “research images.” Ershuu has lived in Berlin in 2005. Between 2007 and 2010, Ershuu studied in the Institute for Art in Context, Faculty of Fine Arts, Berlin University of the Arts and was awarded an MA in Arts in the year 2010. Otgonbayar Ershuu has been showing his work in international shows across Japan, Sweden, France and in the Netherlands, India, Czech Republic, Switzerland, Poland, Romania, Russia, United Arab Emirates, Germany, Moldova and Mongolia.
