Contemporary colloquial theatre is a type of theater Oriza Hirata created in response to “boisterous and festive nature of 1980s Japanese theater.” This style focuses on the colloquial Japanese usage that is created to be distinctively similar to the linguistic trends and the patterns of daily Japanese speaking. This is why his plays usually contain multiple characters speaking at the same time, sentence fragments, unintelligible speech as well as a subtle, “normal” speaking tone. The style is used in the plays’ stylistics, both in terms of language and plot in that Hirata is a strong advocate of realistic elements throughout. Yet, Hirata has preferred his personal stylistic name that of “contemporary colloquial theater” because his opinion is that terms such as Shingeki and Realism “sounded too much like the Western drama that [they] emulated.” The style of Hirata is in part due to his understanding of the effect that Western style an impact on Japanese arts. In reaction Hirata has tried to develop an aesthetic style more authentic to traditional Japanese cultural and language. As a playwright and playwright, he created the Seinendan theatre company in 1983 in order to bring his acting style into the wider Japanese and international theater scene. Hirata has collaborated with international actors in translating his work, ensuring the Japanese character of the speech, which has especially resonated with French audience members. This type of theater also tends to focus on a smaller intimate group of characters, usually depicted by actors who play the role of a family to serve as an “microcosm of Japanese society as a whole.” Japanese theater scholar M. Cody Poulton, says that Hirata’s style is an emphasis on the Greek concept of ethos “the prevalent tone of sentiment of a people or community; the genius of an institution or system.”

In 1983, he founded his own company, the Seinendan Theater Company, which was founded to perform contemporary colloquial theatre.
