The Bermuda national made debut Bermuda in the January 2008 friendly game in a friendly match against Puerto Rico and earned a total of eight caps, scoring one goal. He has played for Bermuda in four FIFA World Cup qualification matches. He took part in all four Bermuda qualifying matches to play in the World Cup in 2010. FIFA World Cup, including their 3-1 win over their neighbors in the Cayman islands on the 30th of March, 2008 and their historic victory of 2-1 against Trinidad and Tobago on June 15th in 2008. He also served as captain of Bermuda’s Bermuda National squad during the qualifying season.
His last international match was in June 2008 World Cup qualification match against Trinidad and Tobago.

Shakir began his professional career with PHC Zebras when he was just 7 starting in the junior ranks all the way to the senior squad, playing every position in between, with the exception of goalkeeper. After graduating from high school, he won an athletic scholarship to play soccer at Howard University in Washington D.C. He was a member of the Mid-Continent Conference championship winning Howard University Bison team in 1998. He was also runners-up in 1997. He picked numerous awards for scholar/athlete throughout his four-year playing career. After returning in Bermuda at the end of 2000 Shakir was able to play for a few short periods with various clubs, before returning to his childhood team PHC Zebras. There Shakir played consistently for a number of seasons as a player in his time in the Bermudian Premier Division winning.
He was the 3rd selection in the draft’s first round selection for the newly established Island Soccer League in Bermuda prior to deciding to be a part of Bermuda Hogges. Bermuda Hogges within the USL Second Division in 2007 and captain the team for the 2009 and 2008 seasons. Then he captained the PHC Zebras in the 2010-11 season.
