Omar M. Yaghi is one of the most popular and richest Chemist who was born on February 9, 1965 in Amman, Amman Governorate, Jordan. Yaghi was born in Amman, Jordan in 1965 to a family of refugees, born in Palestine. He was raised in a home with a lot of children, however, he had access to a limited supply of pure water and no electricity. At the age of 15 He emigrated into America. United States at the encouragement by his father. While he was not fluent in English however, he started classes in Hudson Valley Community College, and later , he transferred to the University at Albany, SUNY to complete his college degree. He started his graduate studies at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and earned his PhD in the year 1990 under the direction by Walter G. Klemperer. He was an National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow at Harvard University (1990-1992) with Professor Richard H. Holm.

His achievements in the design and synthesis of innovative materials have been recognized through The Solid State Chemistry Award of the American Chemical Society and Exxon Co. (1998), as well as the Sacconi Medal of the Italian Chemical Society (2004). His work in hydrogen storage was recognized with his award from the US Department of Energy Hydrogen Program Award (2007). He was awarded the Materials Research Society Medal for work on the research, design, and applications of metal-organic structures and was awarded the Newcomb Cleveland Prize of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for the top research paper released within Science (2007). Yaghi has been awarded the American Chemical Society Chemistry of Materials Award (2009), Izatt- Christensen International Award (2009), the Royal Society of Chemistry Centenary Prize (2010) and the Centenary Prize of the Royal Society of Chemistry (2010) and the China Nano Award (2013). In 2015, he received two prizes: the King Faisal International Prize in Chemistry as well as the Mustafa Prize in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. In 2016, he was awarded the TUBA Academy Prize in Basic and Engineering Sciences for the establishment of Reticular Chemistry. In the year 2017, Yaghi was awarded the Spiers Memorial Award from the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Medal of Excellence of the First Order given on him by the Abdullah II, King of Saudi Arabia. Abdullah II, the Japan Society of Coordination Chemistry International Award as well as the Bailar Medal in Inorganic Chemistry and the Kuwait Prize in Fundamental Sciences along with the Albert Einstein World Award of Science given through the World Cultural Council. In the year 2018, Yaghi was awarded the BBVA Foundation Frontiers of Knowledge Award in the field of Basic Sciences for his pioneering work in Reticular Chemistry. Moreover, in 2018 , he was awarded the Wolf Prize in Chemistry in which he was recognized as the pioneer of reticular chemistry through metal-organic and organic frameworks that covalently bond. The work he has done on harvesting water from desert air by using metal- organic frameworks was recognized in the World Economic Forum in Switzerland as one of the top 10 new technologies and was also presented with an award in 2018: the Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water. Yaghi also won his 2018 Eni Award in recognition of his efforts in applying framework chemistry to create clean energy solutions, including methane storage carbon dioxide conversion and capture and the harvesting of water from the desert air. Yaghi was awarded the award of 2019 Gregori Aminoff Prize by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for his work in the field of the reticular chemical chemistry. In the year 2019, he was awarded the MBR Medal for Scientific Excellence of the United Arab Emirates, as along with the Nano Research Award. Yaghi was awarded the 2020 August-Wilhelm-von-Hofmann- Denkmunze gold medal of the German Chemical Society for his contribution to reticular chemistry and for pioneering MOFs, COFs, and molecular weaving.
