Oliver Thomas is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on February 10, 1957 in United States. Oliver M. Thomas, Jr. (born on 10 February 1957) is an Democratic elected official who hails from New Orleans. Thomas was a member of the New Orleans City Council from 1994 until 2007. On the 13th of August the 13th of August, 2007 Thomas quit his seat on the council after plead guilty to bribery charges.

Thomas was elected first to the City Council in 1994, representing District B, the district that encompasses BOLD’s neighborhood in Central City as well as the Central Business District and parts of Mid-City and Uptown. He was the councilor of the district for two terms until he was elected an at-large position in 2002. As a member of the city council, Thomas gained a reputation for being an effective and responsive elected official. the city councilor gained a great deal of respectability among white and black voters. The popularity of Thomas was evident in both the elections of 2002 as well as 2006 in which Thomas was elected with an amount of votes that was sufficient that he did not need an election runoff. He received eighty percent of votes in 2002, and was elected by 78% votes in 2006. There was widespread speculation that Thomas was going to run for the office of Mayor in New Orleans in 2010.

On August 13, 2007, Thomas resigned his council seat and pleaded guilty to a federal bribery charge. In late 2001 and early 2002, Thomas took $15,000 in kickbacks from Stan “Pampy” Barre, a local businessman and associate of then- mayor Marc Morial. Barre owned a company which operated a number of French Quarter parking lots under contract with the city, and paid Thomas in order to ensure that the Morial-era contracts would be renewed under the incoming administration. Thomas agreed to Barre’s terms, but also demanded and received one-third of the parking profits in kickbacks through one of his associates. On November 21, 2007, Thomas was sentenced to 37 months in federal prison for bribery.

Thomas reported in January 2008 to the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary in Georgia. In June 2009, he was transferred to the low-security Federal Correctional Institution in Oakdale, Louisiana. On March 30, 2010, Thomas was released from Oakdale and moved into a halfway house in the New Orleans neighborhood of Gentilly to serve the final few months of his sentence. In August 2010, he was allowed to return to his home and serve the remainder of his sentence under home confinement. His sentence was officially completed on September 8, 2010, having been reduced for good behavior while he was incarcerated.

Thomas started his career in politics as an active member of BOLD, a political group that was based within New Orleans’ Central City neighborhood. A close ally of BOLD chief and long-time city council member Jim Singleton, Thomas was appointed a legislative aide for Singleton during the year 1986. Thomas then served as an asset administrator in the city’s Downtown Development District, and as an asset manager for a private business.

Thomas was born in the New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, the child of a laborer and an operator of a telephone. After finishing his education at Joseph S. Clark High School and obtaining a scholarship, he was able to attend college following the award of the athletic scholarships. The year 1982 was the time Thomas was awarded a degree of bachelor’s in management at the College of Santa Fe, an institution for liberal arts located situated in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

Oliver Thomas played himself in multiple episodes in Season 2 of HBO’s Treme, set just before he was arrested for bribery in 2007.
