Gill turned professional in July 2009, and in the opening months of the 2009–10 season continued to be an integral member of the reserve team. Throughout the month of October, the team conceded just one goal on the way to four wins and a draw. In December 2009, Gill was rewarded for his performances with a first team squad number, No. 45, and a defensive injury crisis meant that he travelled with the first-team to Germany for their final Champions League group stage game against Wolfsburg on 8 December. He was named as a substitute, but did not take the field. He was again named as an unused substitute for United’s 3–0 home win over Fulham on 14 March 2010.

Although he was born at Frimley, Gill and his family relocated from Frimley to Manchester in 1997, when his father David became the finance director at Manchester United. Gill started his training with Manchester United’s academy. Manchester United academy, and was first introduced to the under-18 team in April of 2006. In that month, Gill was announced as a non-subbed substitute in a 3-2 defeat away to Sunderland. The first time he played with the Under-18s came almost an year later, and Gill was in the starting line-up for the final two matches during the 2006-07 campaign: the 4-0 win away against Sheffield United on 21 April 2007 and a 1-0 defeat at home to Sunderland the following week. On July 7, 2007, Gill was signed on his initial training contract at the club. During following the season, he was an established player in the team for the under-18s and played in 16 league games throughout the season. Gill’s first goal with the Under-18s was on 1 September 2007 when he scored the sole strike in the second minute an 1-0 victory at home over Nottingham Forest.
After his first full season with the Under-18s, Gill had his first taste of reserve team play in July 2008 Gill played two substitute games in friendly matches in the preseason with Altrincham as well as Oxford United. While he was there, he remained an Under-18s regular and on the 8th of October 2008 the day he made his first debut as a reserve player with a 3-0 win away against Bolton Wanderers in the Premier Reserve League. Then, in February of 2009 Gill was able to make the transition in the reserve squad regularly taking part for 12 out of the final 17 games of the season. This included the final match of the season 2008/09 Manchester Senior Cup against Bolton Wanderers; Gill came on in place of the forward Danny Welbeck in the 74th minute, assisting United to win the game in the last 16 minutes to seal the win 1-0.
On 29 September 2010, Gill and his Manchester United Reserves team-mate Reece Brown joined Bradford City on a short-term loan deal until 25 October. The pair made their debuts three days later in Bradford’s 1–0 home defeat against Morecambe on 2 October. Gill appeared in a further three league matches for Bradford, as well as their Football League Trophy second round defeat to Hartlepool United on 5 October. Despite Bradford manager Peter Taylor’s keenness to keep them on, Gill and Brown returned to Manchester United on 25 October. He was named as an unused substitute for United’s 1–0 home win over Bolton on 19 March 2011 and the 4–2 away win over West Ham United on 2 April.
