To allow Butkevych to participate in The 2012 Games, she needed to acquire British citizenship. The governing body for the sport’s sport made a petition to for the Home Office in order to make sure that the citizenship was granted on time to allow her to register to participate in the Games. She was granted British citizenship in February of 2012, after having lived for five years in the UK for five years and was awarded British citizenship and an identity card in May 2012. Her initial application was denied citizenship application in March 2012 however, she was granted it after an appeal. Another fellow Ukrainian and British wrestler Yana Stadnik also had her citizenship application denied in the same manner that Butkevych’s was granted. She was the only Great Britain wrestler in the 2012 Summer Games, where she was a competitor at the female 55 kilos (121 lbs) category. Great Britain were originally due to have three wrestling positions however The Olympic Qualification Standards ruled that they should reduce it to one spot with Butkevych winning the spot. At the Olympic finals she fell to Lissette antes from Ecuador and was ranked eleventh on the standings finalized.

In September 2012 her name was made the initial British wrestler to be a winner in the World Championships, when she was awarded a bronze medal at Edmonton, Canada.
