Oksana Shachko Biography

Oksana Shachko is one of the most popular and richest Artist who was born on January 31, 1987 in Khmelnytskyi, Khmelnytskyi Oblast, Ukraine. Oksana Shachko (Ukrainian: Oksana Shachko ; 31 January 1987 – 23 July 2018,) was an Ukrainian activist and artist with FEMEN. She was among the pioneers of the feminist organisation FEMEN in April of 2008, together as Anna Hutsol and Alexandra Shevchenko the group, which has protested publicly in a variety of countries against the exploitation of women, income inequality and the practices that were imposed by the Roman Catholic Church, among other reasons.

Members of FEMEN and FEMEN, including Shachko was detained at numerous times. The most infamous incident was likely to been in 2011 when activists called for the release from political prisoners in the Belarusian capital Minsk. Shachko along with another two women were abducted by Belarusian KGB and transported to a forest, forced to strip, then sprayed in oil and threatened with setting to blaze.

Shachko worked together with French writer Galia Ackerman who produced a history of FEMEN which was published by Calmann-Lévy in 2013. In 2014, the award winning documentary film about Shachko, Je suis Femen (I am Femen) by filmmaker Alain Margot was released.

At the time of her death, Shachko was concentrating on her artworks, called Iconoclast: Orthodox icons painted in the traditional method, onto which she introduced transgressives details to confront religious dogma with feminist, political or humanist messages. Shachko had her first solo exhibition in Paris on May 2016.

In 2008, along and Anna Hutsol and Alexandra Shevchenko, Shachko founded the feminist activist group FEMEN. The group first protested against issues that affect female students, but then started to protest against the sexual abuse of Ukrainian women as well as against sexual tourism in the year 2008. At first, FEMEN gained attention by demonstrators wearing underwear. However in August 2009 Shachko showed her breasts in the protest in Kiev. Since since then, FEMEN activists have regularly protested in topless clothes and expanded their focus to civil rights for women and women’s rights in Ukraine and across the globe.

In 1995 at the age eight, Chatchko was accepted into at the age of 8 to attend Nikosh school, which was designed to be for adults. It is renowned for its education in Orthodox iconography. She graduated from the school, and her first work was showcased in numerous group exhibitions both in Ukraine and America. United States. When she was twelve, she began to paint frescoes and was employed at the Orthodox church full-time. She later expressed her desire to join a convent to become a nun. However, her mother and family persuaded her to not do this.

This led to the beginning of a profound anxiety of conscience. At that time she was irritated over the absence of space for women’s ideas and express their creative ideas. She co-founded with fellow student members the “Center for New Perspectives” which is a group fighting corruption and for the rights of students. At that point she also met Anna Hutsol and Aleksandra Shevchenko. She later stated in her documentary I am Femen that this encounter shaped her philosophical and political beliefs which led her to be an activist in the fight for women’s rights as well as freedom of expression.

France granted her political refugee status in 2013, after several attacks by security forces connected to Vladimir Putin, a target of FEMEN protests along with the French Front National. She lived in Paris working as a painter.
