She was acting Finance Minister since 8 June 2018 acting after Oleksandr Danylyuk was dismissed on 7 June 2018 after a conflict with Groysman.
After Oleksandr Danylyuk was dismissed on 7 June 2018 after a conflict with Prime Minister Volodymyr Groysman Markarova was appointed acting Minister of Finance on 8 June 2018. On 22 November 2018 the Ukrainian parliament appointed her as Minister of Finance.

Starting March 2015 Markarova was Deputy Minister of Finance under successive ministers Natalie Jaresko and Oleksandr Danylyuk. Having in prior years worked with Jaresko at a US-backed investment fund in Kiev, Markarova joined her as a deputy minister in 2015 to help usher the country through an IMF programme and restructure foreign debt after Russia occupied Crimea.
