Oginohana Akikazu is one of the most popular and richest Rikishi who was born on November 18, 1967 in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. Oginohana was among seven wrestlers born during the school year 1967-1968 that made it to the top division, with the other including Ryukozan, Daishoho, Takatoriki, Mainoumi, Kenko and Terunoumi however, he was the only one of the seven who are still participating in sumo and ozeki, with Mainoumi having decided to quit upon retiring, Takatoriki having been expelled and the remaining four having passed away. Additionally that none of the seven were yokozuna, ozeki or even yokozun as well the way they are viewed in Japan they are often compared negatively to their counterparts in professional baseball, where “Kuwata-Kiyohara Generation” is regarded as the golden time.
Oginohana continued to be a part of the world of sumo as coach at Dewanoumi stable as well as an senior member to the Japan Sumo Association. In the two years following his retirement, he was a jun-tosiyori and used his former fighting name (a method that has since been removed) In 2000, however, his name was changed to Takasaki Oyakata. He succeeded his father, who was at the age of retirement for coaches over 65 years old. In February 2014, he was appointed the head coach of the Dewanoumi stable and succeeded sekiwake Washuyama as well. He was close to retirement age. He also serves as an official judge for tournaments and is a substitute for the chief judge Kasugano as well as Fujishima. In January 2016 , he has been elected as a member of the Sumo Association’s board directors.
Both Oginohana along with his friend and friend, Ryukozan both achieved winning records during their makuuchi debuts. However, Ryukozan fell ill and died from heart attacks in a session of training a couple of weeks later. Oginohana appeared to lose a lot from his fighting spirit following this event. The expected rise to San’yaku ranks was never achieved and he did not win any kind of prize, either a Sansho or other special award. He was twice in a position that could have won the Fighting Spirit Prize if he had won on the last game however both times he was unable to win (to Terao on his top division debut in January 1990, and Takahanada at the end of March, 1991). He was a victim of juryo on several occasions, and ultimately winning the juryo championship four times, which was second only to Masurao’s 5. His final participation in top division came in March of 1996. After that, the end of his career came in July 1998, when he fell short of thirteen fights, and was likely to be moved into the makushita division. The record of his top division was with 169 wins and 216 losses with five absences, with a rate of winning of .439 The highest ranking was maegashira 2 which he achieved in May of 1990.
