Odita is born the 18th of February, 1966 at Enugu, Nigeria. His family in 1967 had to leave Nigeria to escape the Biafran conflict. They later settled at Columbus, Ohio in the United States.

Odita is mostly a painter. He also creates photo-based works and installations. He has tried experimenting using a variety of mediums however his work since the 1990s have been mostly large-scale paintings on canvas or Plexiglass. Sometimes, he paints directly on walls in order to change the way we perceive space. The majority of his paintings involve “complex interlocking geometries and contrasting hues” His paintings can be seen as raising important concerns about race and social.

In 1998 Odili earned an ART/OMI, International Artist Residency.

Odita earned his BFA with distinction at Ohio State University in 1988 in which he was also awarded the Excellence in the Arts Award. He was awarded a Master’s degree in 1990 from Bennington College, Vermont in 1990.

Odili Donald Odita (born 18 February 1966) is an Nigerian American abstract painter who lives and lives at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His work explores color in the historical context of figurative representation as well as the sociopolitical perspective. His colorful abstracts of large scale are called “showstoppers” and are considered to be a way of examining race and the social sphere. A large portion of Odita’s work was in the style of vibrant textiles of his native homeland, Nigeria, mixed with designs taken from Western modernity.

While often compared to mainstream abstract artists like Helen Frankenthaler and Kenneth Noland, Odita intentionally places himself within the style of abstract black painters of the 1970s and the 1980s. Odita has studied and talked to a number of the artists of that time period, including Howardena Pindell, Alvin D. Loving, Edward Clark, Frank Bowling, and Stanley Whitney.

In the 1990s Odita was a critic for Flash Art International, and a consulting editor and writer for NKA, Journal of Contemporary African Art. From 2003 to 2005 he was a Visiting Critic in Painting at Yale University School of Art. From 2002 to 2003 he was a Visiting Associate Professor in Painting at the University of South Florida, Tampa. From 2000 to 2006 he was an Associate Professor in Painting at the Florida State University, Tallahassee. From 2006 to the present Odita has been an Associate Professor of Painting in Philadelphia at the Tyler School of Art / Temple University.
