Bettison began his career in the police force in 1975, when at 19 years old at the time, he was appointed to South Yorkshire Police as a Constable. He was a member of the ranks, serving as a Superintendent within the Traffic Division from October 1989 until January 1991, being employed as a member of the Hillsborough disaster liaison team as Superintendent of the Divisional Commander’s Office from January 1991 until April 1992; and then as Chief Superintendent of the Corporate Development unit from April 1992 until May 1993. In May 1993, he was appointed the Assistant Chief Constable of West Yorkshire Police, where his duties comprised Management & Information Support, Personnel as well as Operations Support.

Sir Norman George Bettison, QPM (born 3 January 1956) is a British former police officer, and the Chief Constable for the West Yorkshire Police. He resigned in October of 2012 amid controversy over his involvement in the Hillsborough disaster, where his involvement was in the implementing of a cover-up to cover up police mistakes. He was still the subject of investigation by the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) investigation. He was charged on the 28th of July 2017 by four charges of misdeeds in the public offices. The case was dismissed on the 21st of August, 2018. Bettison’s personal work Hillsborough Untold (2016) contains his own version of events.
