Ali is a right-handed batsman , as well as a right-arm medium fast bowler who is currently a member of the Afghanistan national cricket team. He credits Ricky Ponting as his cricketing idol and his inspiration to pursue a career in cricket. He is the nephew Mujeeb Ur Rahman Zadran also plays as an Afghan international cricketer.
While Afghanistan was touring The Netherlands during 2009 Ali played a crucial half-century of the second innings of the Intercontinental Cup match against the Netherlands in 2009, guiding Afghanistan to secure a one-wicket victory. The month of November, 2009 Ali made a significant player in the Afghanistan ACC Twenty20 winning team.
In the World Cup Qualifier, he made his List-A debut against Denmark. Later in the tournament, Ali scored 122 against Canada in the Super Eights in the 2009 ICC World Cup Qualifier; this match predated Afghanistan’s ODI status (achieved later in the tournament), but was a List A game. During the tournament Afghanistan gained ODI status. He made his One Day International debut against Scotland, where he scored 45 runs.
In Afghanistan’s inaugural match in the 2010 ICC World Twenty20 against India, Ali struck 50 from 48 balls and shared in a paternership of 68 with Asghar Afghan. Ali’s 50 could not save Afghanistan from a 7 wicket defeat. In the team’s second match against South Africa, Ali was one of a number of Afghan batsman who were unable to cope with the express pace of the South African attack, with Ali being caught behind by Mark Boucher from the bowling of Dale Steyn.
Ali was a member of the fast-growing Afghan cricket team, which between 2008 and 2009, won in the World Cricket League Division Five Division Four and Division Three which allowed them to be promoted up to Division Two and permitting them to participate during this year’s ICC World Cup Qualifier’s.
