Nomvula Mokonyane is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on June 28, 1963 in Kagiso, Gauteng, South Africa. Nomvula Paula Mokonyane (born 28 June 1963, Kagiso, Gauteng) was minister of Environmental Affairs in South Africa appointed on the 22nd of November 2018 by the presidency of President Cyril Ramaphosa. She was appointed to the Cabinet of South Africa in May 2014 under President Jacob Zuma, serving as Minister of the Department of Water and Sanitation and was appointed the Minister for Communication in the administration of the presidency of President Cyril Ramaphosa in January 2018. Prior to her appointment to Cabinet, she was premier for the province of Gauteng province, which was elected after the 2009 South African general election. She also serves as Honorary President of the SA-China People’s Friendly Association.

In the wake of the South African general election, Mokonyane was elected Gauteng’s Premier Gauteng the 6th of May, 2009. She became Gauteng’s first female leader. She succeeded outgoing Gauteng Premier Paul Mashatile. After her appointment as the Premier, she overhauled and re-organized the Gauteng province’s administration which included the establishment of a planning department. The decision to select her by the NEC was a shock considering that currently in office Paul Mashatile was widely expected to be re-elected. The ANC selects the national premier (of provinces where it holds majority) and then directs provincial MPLs on how to select their preferred candidate in the formal election.

A report by City Press found that a single company, LTE Consulting, has been awarded contracts worth R5 billion in a single year, all dealing with water and sanitation. LTE had also donated up to R3.5 million to the ANC in only two months (May and June 2016). Should LTE join the project, they stand to make R2.6 billion. Officials involved in the Lesotho Highlands Project, and who denied LTE tenders, have since been replaced.

In 2019, former Bosasa chief operations officer Angelo Agrizzi testified to the Zondo Commission of Inquiry into State Capture that Mokonyane was paid R50 000 a month for years to protect the company from law enforcement agencies.

Mokonyane worked in the Gauteng Legislature from 1994 onwards in different portfolio committees prior to when being appointed MEC for Agriculture, Conservation and Environment in 1996. She was appointed MEC of Safety and Liaison from 1999 to 2004. Safety and Liaison from 1999 until 2004, as well as Housing MEC between 2004 and 2009. Mokonyane is also an active participant in the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress elected at the 52nd national conference held in 2007. The conference was held in Polokwane.
