From 1981 until 1991, Mfeketo was employed by the agricultural training NGO ZAKH following which she was employed in SCAT from 1991 to 1992. Social Change Assistance Trust (SCAT) between 1991 and 1992. From 1992 until 1994 Mfeketo was employed by The Development Action Group (DAG) in a housing project for the public.
In 2007 Mfeketo received African National Congress’ National Executive Committee. The 6th of May 2009 Mfeketo was elected as the Deputy speaker for the National Assembly.
Nomaindiya Mfeketo is a South African politician who served as Minister of Human Settlements from 2018 to 2019, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of South Africa from 2009 to 2014, and mayor of Cape Town from 1998 to 2000 and again from 2002 to 2006.
In 2009, the DA claimed that Mfeketo was given an’mansion’ built by custom valued at R8 million in the controversial housing scheme of the government that ministers were given in Cape Town and Pretoria even having her own residence, which was 9 km away.

She was involved in negotiations with DAG during 1993. was involved in negotiations to integrate state and non-state initiatives to prepare South Africa for its transition to a multiracial democracy. In the wake of Mfeketo’s involvement in conjunction with DAG Mfeketo was appointed Chairperson of Cape Town’s very first democratically elected City Council in Cape Town during the 1996-98 interim phase.
She was the fourth woman and first black woman the mayor of the city, when she was elected Mayor for a short time in 1998. Mayor Zille was elected again following the floor-crossing process that made her party called that of the African National Congress (ANC) as the majority on City Council in the year 2002, removing Gerald Morkel of the Democratic Alliance (DA). The post remained vacant until the DA took back majority control over the city council and, following that, Helen Zille took office.
Mfeketo served in this position until May 21, 2014, when she was succeeded by former Minister of Co-Operative Governance, Lechesa Tsenoli.
