Nirupama Sanjeev (nee: Vaidyanathan; born 8 December 1976) is a retired Indian professional tennis player and also the former Indian No. 1. In 1998’s Australian Open, she became the first Indian woman of the modern time to play and take home a victory at the main draw of a Grand Slam, beating Italy’s Gloria Pizzichini. She also took home the Bronze Medal at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games in Mixed Doubles with Mahesh Bhupathi. Sanjeev became the initial Indian female to be included in the top 200 singles world rankings.
On the 23rd of May 2002, she got married to Sanjeev Balakrishnan. He is an engineer in the field of software from Bay Area, California; the brother of Indian sprinter Rajeev Balakrishnan.
She was laid off in the latter 2000s. Her return came in 2010, when she represented India for the Commonwealth Games 2010 and in Asian games in Guangzhou aged 33.

Nirupama was born in India. Southern Indian town of Coimbatore. She began playing tennis when she was 5 and was influenced heavily by her older brother. The father of her K.S. Vaidyanathan was a professional cricketer who been a player in Tamil Nadu in Ranji Cricket tournament. He coached her right from the beginning in her professional career. Her first experience in a tennis tournament took place at her participation in the National Under 12 tournament, in which she reached the semi-finals and then won her first National title in the Under 14 at age 13. In 1991, a year later she took home her first National Women’s title at age 14. She took home her the National Women’s title in 1992-1996.
The year 1996 was the time she relocated to Luxembourg and turned professional at 18. Nirupama moved her home in Sarasota, Florida in 1997 in 1997, where she worked with David O Meara who was the head coach for Leander Paes for two seasons. In 1998, at the Australian Open, she became the first Indian woman of the current era to compete in and take home a victory of the main draw of a Grand Slam, beating Italy’s Gloria Pizzichini. She also won the Bronze Medal at the 1998 Bangkok Asian Games in Mixed Doubles with Mahesh Bhupathi.
For the past five years, Nirupama has been on the expert commentary team along with Indian tennis legend Vijay Amritraj for ESPN-STAR sports. Nirupama also runs a tennis coaching camp in the Bay Area, California. She is launched her autobiography “The Moonballer” in October 2013.
