Nikki Stone, who competed in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan, is most well-known because she was the only American to be awarded the gold medal for an Inverted Aerial Skier. The sport of aerial Skiing is a type of sport in which athletes take 10 foot (3.0 metres) snow jump at around 40 miles an hour (64 km/h) then flip, twist and/or flip until they reach an altitude that is 50ft (15 meters) and fall down the 45-degree slope.

In her professional career, Stone has been awarded more than 35 World Cup medals, 11 World Cup titles, four national titles, two years-long Aerial World Cup titles, and the World Championship title. She was also the first pure aerialist (male and female) to be the year-long Overall Freestyle World Cup Champion. In the 2002 Olympics she was the one to carry the Olympic torch from the plane, alongside Bill Spencer, that had brought it to the U.S. from Greece. She was admitted into the National Ski Hall of Fame in 2003.
