Nii Lamptey is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on December 10, 1974 in Tema, Greater Accra Region, Ghana. Nii Odartey Lamptey (born 10 December 1974) is a former Ghanaian professional footballer. He is the current the assistant coach of Sekondi Wise Fighters as well as the owner of an academy located in Accra known as Glow- Lamp International Schools. In his professional career, he was a striker from 1990 to 2008, notably for Aston Villa, PSV Eindhoven, Coventry City and the Ghana national team.

Lamptey was married to Gloria Appiah in 1993. The marriage was not a popular one that angered his brothers as Gloria is from an ethnic group that is different (Fante) in comparison to Lamptey’s (Ga). There were five kids, out of which two passed away due to lung ailments. A DNA test showed that the test resulted in him not being the natural father to the other three children. He divorced his wife. Even though she brought him to court to claim 50percent of his assets as part of the divorce, that request was rejected from the court.

His international career with Ghana dried up after he was sent off in the 1996 African Cup of Nations semi-final game against South Africa on 31 January

  1. The Black Stars finished fourth, after losing to Zambia in the 3rd Place play-off game without the suspended Lamptey. Lamptey did not play for Ghana again after they lost 8–2 to Brazil in São José do Rio Preto, 27 March 1996 in a Pre-1996 Summer Olympics friendly match. Many observers believe that the numerous back and forth travels to Africa for International matches, stalled his young career at Club level. His career later went into a slump.

On 5 March 2007, Lamptey signed for South African side Jomo Cosmos, playing here until 1 December 2007.

At just 16 yearsold, Nii Lamptey scored his first international appearance as a senior player for Ghana in the match in 1992 African Cup of Nations Qualifying home game with Togo during the 43rd minutes. Ghana defeated Togo with a 2-0 win. He was an established International and his impressive results earned him a place within the “Black Stars”, forming an impressive attacking team with Captain Abedi Pele, and the Super-striker Tony Yeboah. Ghana fell in their final match of 1992’s African Cup of Nations to Cote Ivoire after a lengthy penalty shoot-out Senegal which the dynamic Lamptey was playing at the age of 17. The player continued to develop as a senior International level at this young age, and has played in any Ghana International game since then.

Lamptey first started to draw the attention of the world in 1991 when he played a key role in leading Ghana to victory at in the 1991 FIFA U-17 World Championship with the team dubbed The Black Starlets after playing in the 1989 edition when he was an 15 year old. He was awarded his FIFA Best Player of the competition – and the Golden Ball award in a contest that also featured the Argentina’s Juan Sebastian Veron and Marcelo Gallardo as well as Italian’s Alessandro del Piero, Lamptey’s shining star shined more brightly than all the others, as his team dominated the tournament. Lamptey was later hailed by the media as the next Pele according to Pele himself. The player scored 4 goals at the tournament. Lamptey later said that while he was his praise was appreciated, it caused a lot of stress for him, as everyone had very demanding expectations of him which were not always possible to fulfill.

Ron Atkinson brought Lamptey to Aston Villa in the summer of 1994. This move came as a surprise, as PSV was a more successful club than Aston Villa at the time and Lamptey was one of the star players at PSV. However, Lamptey had signed an exclusive marketing contract with an Italian player agent. The player’s agent, Antonio Caliendo, would get 25% of whatever Lamptey’s transfer fee was, and accordingly sold him to Villa as that would mean the largest commission for himself. Lamptey’s illiteracy allowed Caliendo to take advantage of him, even pocketing a signing on bonus intended for Lamptey. He failed to impress at Villa Park, scoring just three times, all of which came in the League Cup against Wigan Athletic (once in the home leg and twice in the away leg).
