In 1985, he went to Iceland during a period of six weeks. aiding an expedition group from Cambridge with logistics as well as managing the kayaking portion. He returned to establish his own business of kayaking. The group taught him local lessons across Denmark, Sweden, Iceland, Finland, Canada and the United States.

Since 2007 Foster has been the head of research and development at Point65. In addition to designing products forPoint65, He also acts as a spokesperson and assists the company with PR, marketing and special events. Foster presently lives in Seattle, WA with his wife Kristin Nelson.

Foster began kayaking in Brighton, England when he was 15 years old. He was using a skin-on frame kayak. At the Burwash Place Outdoor Activity Center in Burwash, Sussex, England, Foster learned to handle whitewater sea kayaking, surf and whitewater kayaking. From 1971 until 1972, Foster was employed as an “trainee instructor”. He loved the blend between Outdoor Activity instruction and Environmental Studies education, and chose to pursue it as career. He took a three-year teacher formation course offered at Redland College, Bristol, and also gained experience in the classroom with two years of teaching at an elementary school located in Buckinghamshire.
