Some success was achieved during the last quarter of his busy time particularly his participation in the Linares Open of 2000, however in the Moscow Aeroflot Open of 2004, Dolmatov famously lost a game against the 13 year old Magnus Carlsen in just 19 moves. Sergey Dolmatov has also been an eminent chess writer during the beginning of the 2000s, submitting opening reports and tournament reviews to magazines for chess such as New In Chess.
