Some success was achieved during the last quarter of his busy time particularly his participation in the Linares Open of 2000, however in the Moscow Aeroflot Open of 2004, Dolmatov famously lost a game against the 13 year old Magnus Carlsen in just 19 moves. Sergey Dolmatov has also been an eminent chess writer during the beginning of the 2000s, submitting opening reports and tournament reviews to magazines for chess such as New In Chess.
However, as is frequently the case, this kind of initial progress is often difficult to keep going. Even though he won at Hastings (1989-90 and then an important round-robin competition) as a clear first and getting himself an World Championship candidate from the robust Manila Interzonal of 1990, Dolmatov was unable to convert his preliminary round match against his best friend Artur Yusupov the next year. However, in this time his Elo rating was over 2600 and he was able to keep this rating throughout the following decade. As the year 2000 approached the end of his playing time, his intensity diminished and, as of 2004, he’s been more or less idle.
