Nigel Carolan (born 27 December 1974) is a union rugby trainer from Ireland. The current position is head of backs for the Irish Pro14 side Connacht, being previously director of the provincial academy. Before becoming a coach, Carolan played for Connacht in the past as an athlete but had to leave the club because of injury in the year 2000.
In March of 2017 it was announced that Carolan was going to join the senior team of backroom staff in the hands of Kieran Keane in the 2017-18 campaign. In the wake of the announcement, he quit his post as a coach for the Irish under-20s immediately as Peter Malone replacing him for the forthcoming World Championship. The change in leadership ended Carolan’s 13-year reign as the head of the province’s academy. the former Connacht Head Coach Eric Elwood named as his successor in May 2017.
In 2012-13, Connacht’s second-tier team called named the Connacht Eagles began competing in the British and Irish Cup, with Carolan being their head coach. Carolan was in charge for two seasons prior to being named by Mike Ruddock as head coach of the Ireland under-20 team in October of 2014. Carolan was the coach for the team in the three Six Nations and two World Championships which included a third place finish at the 2016 World Championship their best ever performance at the event.

Carolan was primarily an wing player but also played as a centre player during his time. He played for the teams of Galway Corinthians and Galwegians at the amateur level. In 1996, right at the start of the professional age, Carolan was part of Warren Gatland’s Connacht team. He was a part of the team at the Interprovincial Championship as well as the European Challenge Cup until 2000 after an injury to his neck caused him to quit at the age 26.
Carolan was appointed the head of Connacht’s Academy in 2004 and was responsible for the development paths of players in the youth age group in the club, as well as coaching youth teams and scouting for youth players from outside of the province. In the beginning of his professional career the former assistant coach also worked as a technical advisor to the Irish under- 21s team. Carolan was then appointed assistant coach for players of the Irish youth with Allen Clarke in 2008, being in that position until 2010.
