Bushnell was among a number of business owners from the north-east who were played a prominent role on the Passionate People, Passionate Places campaign that promoted the north-east region of England. The campaign was in operation from 2005 through 2006 and included advertising posters at stations for trains, London tube stations and in the national and local newspapers. It was in the year 2006 that Bushnell offered his assistance to an effort led by Hartlepool businesses to obtain an immediate rail connection to London. Then, in December of 2007 Grand Central Railway began daily services to London. In 2017 He joined the Tees Valley Digital Strategy Board to aid in the development of the Tees Valley’s tech industries.

Bushnell submitted the first 30 pages of Sorrowline into the 2011 Northern Writers Awards, an annual event organised New Writing North, a development agency for creative writing and creative reading based in the north east of England. Bushnell received a Northern Promise Award and Sorrowline was quickly picked up for publication by Andersen Press in the United Kingdom, Heyne in Germany and by Pensamento-Cultrix in Brazil.

Bushnell was Co-Producer (with Chris Chapman) of two animated episodes of the Doctor Who story The Ice Warriors, which was released on DVD in August 2013. In 2018 Bushnell contributed new animation and visual effects to the Doctor Who story Revenge of the Cybermen for the season 12 blu-ray release. Since then, Bushnell has produced new animation, graphics and visual effects for the Season 19 story Castrovalva, the Season 14 story The Talons of Weng-Chiang and the Season 18 story Logopolis.

In addition to promoting writing through his activities in and the Society of Authors and New Writing North, Bushnell has been involved in numerous initiatives that highlight and promote his home town that is Hartlepool as well as the region’s north-east of England. Bushnell has frequently advocated for the promotion of the town of his birthplace, Hartlepool and in 2003, was part of a tiny group of local businesses that came together to begin the innovative Hartlepool campaign. Bushnell was a participant at events and roadshows throughout the region. The campaign culminated with visiting the Parliament Houses as the chance to pitch Hartlepool to MPs and other business leaders from across the nation as a great place to do business.
