Avant has been named United States Ambassador to the Bahamas by President Barack Obama on June 16 2009, and was officially sworn in on the 22nd, 2009 and was in office until November 21, 2011. at the age of 41, she became the first African-American woman to be appointed Ambassador and was the oldest US ambassador to Bahamas. Bahamas ever. In her time she Avant was awarded the state department’s Sue M. Cobb Award for outstanding diplomatic service. she is known by many as being among the most well-known Ambassadors who served for the U.S. in the Island nation.

An State Department inspector general’s report on the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas felicitated the Ambassador and the embassy, stating the fact that “The large and diverse law enforcement community in Mission Bahamas works well together, under the Ambassador’s leadership, to counter threats to U.S. national security.” The report also stated that the Ambassador, as well as the Chief of Mission deputy who she had hired was “emerging strongly from a period of dysfunctional leadership and management.” The inspector general also found that Nicole Avant was frequently away from the embassy, often travelling between home and home located in Los Angeles. While they were in the Bahamas she frequently employed from her office in the home instead of working in the Embassy. Nicole Avant “was absent from [her] post for 276 days during a 670-day period from November 19, 2009, to September 19, 2011–an average of 12 days per month. The 276 days include…102 personal leave days. [She] also traveled to the United States for 77 work days on what she identified as business, with 23 days on what appear to have been official travel orders.” The report noted that the embassy “had not had frequent policy-level interaction with the [State] Department or other Washington agencies… She relied unduly on her [deputy chief of mission] to attend to day-to-day contacts with the [State] Department.” The report also praised the quality of service provided by the consular department, pointing out that the consular section had an “invigorated” public affairs section and stated it was noted that “she (Avant) along with her staff have helped improve the reputation of the Embassy with Bahamians. This results in resulted in a very close and cooperative atmosphere that encourages an excellent law enforcement collaboration.”
