After a single season as the director of sports in Foggia as part of Serie C1 from 2006 to 2007 when Foggia’s Apulian team was promoted from Serie C1 to Serie B in the last second game of their playoff against Avellino.
On 12 October 2009 he became the sports director of U.S. Salernitana 1919; after his resignation on 11 February 2011 subsequent to the start of the new owners at the helm of the club.
After the summer of 2011, after the experience with Salernitana, after having being in touching distance of a return to Serie B until losing the play-off final against Hellas Verona F.C.. Salerno made a brief return to Messina (who had fallen to Series D), where he served as the technical advisor. In November 2011, he was appointed as the new sporting director of Grosseto in Serie B.
In the following season, he was transferred into Serie A side Cagliari Calcio which is where he began his collaboration with Cagliari manager Massimo Cellino. He was the champion in Serie B for 2003-2004, and he continued to work with the club until.

The son of senator Francesco Carmelo Salerno, former president of Matera the city of Matera, he began his professional career with Serie C2 as sporting director between 1983 and 1984, until 1985 and 1986. He then worked as a the director of sports and markets at Ravenna and the Licata which was a part of Serie B in season 1988-1989 before moving to Trieste from 1989 until 1993.
After having been disqualified in the beginning as sports director for Messina between 1997 and 2002. Salerno was hailed for being one of the main architects behind the Giallorossi’s revival after they rose in just some time away from National Amateur Championship to Serie B.
