Wittgren was born in Torrance in California. He grew up in Lafayette in Indiana, where he attended McCutcheon High School. Wittgren played for the school’s basketball, tennis, and baseball teams. Wittgren was a college baseball player at Parkland College for one year, before moving to Purdue University in 2011. He was the Purdue closer during his two-year tenure. He finished with a 2.54 earned run average (ERA), 22 saves, and 94 strikeouts in 92 innings. He played college summer baseball for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks, Cape Cod Baseball League.
Wittgren was selected by the Miami Marlins during the ninth round in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft. While playing for the Jamestown Jammers, Greensboro Grasshoppers, Wittgren had a 1.17 ERA and 13 saves in his first professional season. He also had 47 strikeouts during that time. He began the 2013 season playing for the Jupiter Hammerheads. In 2013, he was promoted to Double-A Jacksonville Suns. He posted a season record of 0.77 ERA, 26 saves, and 63 strikeouts. This was an improvement on his 58 /3. The staff at MiLB.com named him the Minor League Relief Pitcher Of Year at the end of his season. Wittgren was back in Jacksonville in 2014. Wittgren appeared in 52 games, and had a 3.55 ERA and 20 saves. He also struck out 56 times over 66 innings. After two games, he was promoted to Triple-A New Orleans Zephyrs.
