Nicholas Brewer Thoman, born March 6, 1986, is an American competition swimmer. He specializes in the backstroke. He is also an Olympic gold medalist. As a member the winning United States medley relay team at the FINA World Swimming Championships, he has won two world championships. He held the world record for the 100-meter backstroke (short) from 2009 to 2015. Thoman has won a total ten medals at major international competitions. He holds the world record for the 100-meter backstroke (short course): four gold, three silver and three bronze. This includes the Olympics, World Championships and Pan Pacific Championships. He was part of the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team and won silver and gold medals at the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Thoman was fourth in the 100-meter backstroke final at the 2011 World Aquatics Championships, Shanghai, China. His time was 53 seconds. Thoman was the winner of gold in the 4×100-meter Medley Relay with Nathan Adrian, Michael Phelps and Mark Gangloff. His time was 3:32.06. Thoman was 53.61 in the backstroke leg.
At the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska, the U.S. qualifying meet for the Olympics, Thoman made the U.S. Olympic team for the first time by finishing second in the 100-meter backstroke in a time of 52.86. Thoman also placed third in the 200-meter backstroke with a time of 1:57.06, missing a spot in that event.
On December 6, 2013, at the U.S. national championships in Knoxville Tennessee, Thoman set three American records in one evening. He broke the American record in the 50-yard backstroke (20.69), was part of an American record-breaking 200-yard medley relay (with E. Knight, T. Phillips and C. Jones, 1:23.02) and shattered the American record in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 44.07.
Thoman was able to qualify for the 2010 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships as a 50, 100, and 200-meter backstroke swimmer. Thoman finished first in the 100-meter backstroke final of the 2010 National Championships with a time 25.80. He finished third with 53.78 seconds, just behind Aaron Peirsol and David Plummer. Thoman was 5th in the 200-meter backstroke final with a time 1:57.7. Thoman was awarded bronze at the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships 2010.

Thoman was born in Cincinnati Ohio. From age 8 to high school, he swam with Cincinnati Aquatic Club’s head coach Benson Spurling. Kevin Maness was his coach at Mariemont High School, a suburb of Cincinnati. Thoman, Mark Gangloff and Michael Phelps teamed up in the 2009 Duel in the Pool to break the previous world record held by Canada. They ran 4×100-meter Medley relay. In the final, Thoman placed second behind fellow American Matt Grevers with a time of 52.92. He also earned a gold medal swimming the backstroke leg for the winning U.S. team in the preliminaries of the 4×100-meter medley relay.
