Nick Grono is one of the most popular and richest Human Rights Activist who was born on July 22, 1966 in Germany. Grono grew up on the square-rigged sailing vessel “Eye of the Wind”, built in 1911. Grono, his father, and his younger brother, sailed from England, Australia, from October 1976 to Dec 1977. He was accompanied by 25 crew members, including his mother, younger brother, and his father. They visited the West Indies and the Panama Canal, as well as the Galapagos and Easter Island, Pitcairn and Tahiti, Vanuatu and many other places. In 1981/1982, he and his family made the same trip again. This time, they also participated in filming “Nate and Hayes” at Fiji with Tommy Lee Jones.

In 2012, he became the CEO of the Walk Free Foundation. As the CEO of the Walk Free Foundation, he was able to attract more than 5 million supporters. The Foundation launched the first ever Global Slavery Index in 2013. Grono has published extensively on international justice, conflict prevention and modern slavery in The Guardian, Foreign Policy and Huffington Post, as well as other publications such as The New York Times, The Guardian and Foreign Policy. Grono testified as an expert before the UN Security Council in December 2015.

Grono has been CEO of Freedom Fund since January 2014.

Grono has been co-chair of the Jo Cox Foundation since late 2016, and a board member of Girls Not Brides, the Global Partnership to End Child Marriage, since 2015.

Grono started working at the International Crisis Group in 2003. It is the largest conflict prevention NGO worldwide, based in Brussels. In 2008, he was appointed Deputy President and COO and is responsible for overseeing and managing the organization’s programs and operations in more than thirty countries. He testified before the Australian, UK, Dutch and Dutch Parliaments on human rights and conflict issues.

Grono graduated from the University of Sydney with a law degree and first- class honours. Grono also holds a Masters degree in Public Policy from Princeton University. He started his career in Perth, Western Australia as a lawyer. From 1992 to 1994, he was a researcher at Goldman Sachs, London. He returned to Australia in 1994 to become a lawyer. In fact, he was the Chief of Staff and the National Security Adviser to Australia’s Attorney-General (from 1999 through 2001).

In 2013, the Walk Free Foundation joined with Humanity United and the Legatum Foundation to establish the Freedom Fund, the world’s first philanthropic fund dedicated to identifying and investing in the most effective frontline efforts to end modern slavery. The Freedom Fund was announced by President Bill Clinton at the Clinton Global Initiative in September 2013, who declared, “This is a huge deal and we should all support this.” The Fund focuses its work on areas where slavery is prevalent using a “hotspot” funding model. It identifies effective local anti-slavery initiatives and invests to improve their effectiveness and impact. Global initiatives, which coordinate efforts and resources around industries where slavery is common, are also used. The Fund also strives to strengthen the global movement of activists, experts and donors by providing the platform, knowledge and tools for them to connect and work together more effectively.
