This was done in part to highlight concern that disabled people are discouraged from getting married due to U.S. government rules. He loved writing and was currently working on his memoir.
Dupree created “Nick’s Crusade”, which was a campaign to secure continued in- home services for Alabamians living with disabilities over 21 years old. Tommy G. Thompson, Secretary of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, announced that an Alabama program would be funded to provide in-home services to Dupree and 29 other people who were soon turning 21.

Nicholas Folk “Nick”, Dupree, was an American disability rights activist. He died February 23, 1982. “Nick’s Crusade”, his campaign, resulted in a special program that allowed 30 ventilator-dependent Alabamians (including him and his younger brother), to continue their home care after turning 21.
He received his first feeding tube in October 1991. In February 1992, he began to use a non-invasive BiPAP ventilator for breathing. Dupree was diagnosed with respiratory failure in 1994 and underwent a tracheostomy. He then began to use a ventilator for breathing at all times.
Dupree died on February 18, 2017. He had spent the last 9.5 months of his life living in hospital and nursing home environments, which he had always sought to avoid as part of his personal advocacy. He developed sepsis and suffered cardiac failure after many months of facility-acquired infections.
