Colgan signed a free transfer to Bournemouth in July 1998 after his release from Chelsea. Colgan was second to Mark Ovendale throughout his entire time at Dean Court. He would not make a single appearance for the club.

Colgan made his Ireland début in March 2002, against Denmark. He went on to make a total of ten appearances for his country, but was selected many more times for the national squad as a backup to the likes of Shay Given and Paddy Kenny.

In the summer of 2004, Colgan signed for Barnsley, where he endured a tough first season only playing in 15 games and ending up on loan to Dundee United for 3 months. The 2005–2006 Barnsley campaign showed a turn of fortune for Colgan as he became the team’s first choice keeper. His outstanding displays during the season earned him 20 clean sheets in total as well as the title of Barnsley’s Player of the Year and helped the team reach the League One Play- off final at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff on 27 May 2006 where despite a mistake letting Swansea City take the lead, he recovered to make a historic save from Alan Tate in the penalty shoot out which ensured Barnsley won their place back in the Championship. On 4 October 2007 he handed in a transfer request at Barnsley after losing his place to summer arrival Heinz Müller. Manager Simon Davey accepted the request.

Colgan signed professional terms to Chelsea. Chelsea was a founding club in the FA Premier League. He had played in their youth team six times in 1990/91 and became their regular goalkeeper the following season. Colgan was named third choice goalkeeper at Stamford Bridge, behind Dmitri Khrine and Kevin Hitchcock. Glenn Hoddle was appointed player-manager and replaced Porterfield in February 1993. Colgan was then put up for loan. Dario Gradi signed Colgan in September 1993 on a one-month loan with Crewe Alexandra. However, he did not make an appearance for Crewe Alexandra and soon returned to Stamford Bridge. Colgan joined Alan Buckley at Grimsby Town during the 1994-1995 season. He was used as a deputy goalkeeper to Paul Crichton. However, Colgan was not employed at Blundell Park while he was in Humberside. Colgan was loaned to Millwall in London during the 1995-1996 season. However, he failed to make his first team debut. Ruud Gullit replaced Hoddle for the 1996-1997 season. Colgan made his professional debut in an away loss to West Ham United, a 3-2, on 12 March 1997. Colgan was the current first choice Frodegrodas, who sat on the bench. That day, the Chelsea team included Gianfranco Zola and Gianluca Vialli as well as Dan Petrescu, Dennis Wise, Dennis Wise, Mark Hughes, and Gianluca Vialli. The 1996-97 FA Cup was won by Chelsea that season. Colgan was in the semi-final against Wimbledon, but Kevin Hitchcock was there for the match day squad. He would make five loan appearances for Brentford and Reading in the 1997-1998 season. However, he would not experience first-team football at Chelsea. Colgan was released by Chelsea, now managed and controlled by Gianluca VIalli in 1998.
