McGegan served as Artistic Director at the Gottingen International Handel Festival from 1991 to 2011. From 2002 to 2005, he was the music director for the Irish Chamber Orchestra. He was awarded Artist in Association status with the Adelaide Symphony of Australia in 2014. In addition to his long-term appointment with the Drottningholm Theatre (where he was principal conductor between 1993 and 1996), the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Drottningholm Theatre Theatre, he also has long- term contracts. McGegan is also the founder of The Arcadian Academy, a chamber music group.

McGegan was educated at Nottingham High School. McGegan studied music at Magdalen College in Oxford and Corpus Christi College in Cambridge. McGegan has participated in some of the earliest “authentic-performance” recordings during the 1970s as a baroque flautist, including Christopher Hogwood’s seminal recordings of Mozart symphonies. He has been a music teacher at various UK institutions, including King’s College in Cambridge, Oriel College in Oxford, King’s College in Cambridge, Oriel College in Oxford, and Royal College of Music. He was the Principal Guest Conductor for the Scottish Opera from 1993 to 1998.

He has been a regular guest conductor ever since. McGegan was appointed music director of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, San Francisco, and Berkeley, California in 1985. He was Music Director of Ojai Music Festival in 1988 with Peter Maxwell Davies, Diane Wittry. He has been the Principal Guest Conductor for the Pasadena Symphony since 2013. McGegan was announced by the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra in October 2018 that he would be retiring as music director following the 2019-2020 season and will take the title music director laureate.

McGegan has made more than 100 recordings, including many with Philharmonia Baroque and singers such as Lorraine Hunt Lieberson and Lisa Saffer, for such labels as Philharmonia Baroque Productions and harmonia mundi. He was nominated for a Grammy Award for his 2011 release on the orchestra’s label of the Symphonies nos. 88, 101, and 104 of Joseph Haydn.
