Neo Ntsoma was born 27 December 1972 in South Africa. She is well-known for her photojournalism and portraiture. Her fascination with films began at an early age. She was born in Vryburg, and grew up in Mafikeng, North West Province. As a child growing up during apartheid, she saw the negative portrayals of black South Africans as well as the inability of black women to participate in a media industry dominated predominantly by white men. This re- energized her desire to change the world, but it was difficult to realize because of the restrictions on race. Ntsoma was a student at St Mary’s High School, where she was introduced to dance, music and drama. This is where she realized her career path was not like her peers. Despite many setbacks in her life, she continued to pursue her dream of becoming a photographer. Ntsoma’s photographs are unique because of the unusual angles they were taken from and the way that she manipulates what is in focus and what isn’t. She is an award- winning photographer and a mentor to young photojournalists.

Born in Vryburg, raised in rural Mafikeng in North West Province. Ntsoma is the last of three children to Olefile Ntsoma, and Nomalanga Mari Ntsoma nee Hlabangane. Photographics is a career she discovered by chance, something that was not well-known for black women in the 1960s. Ntsoma started her Peninsula Technikon studies in 1992. Ntsoma was initially interested in Television and Film. Before her enrollment at the Technikon, she had never touched a camera. After finishing her Fashion and Advertising studies, she moved to Pretoria Technikon in 1995.

In 2004, Neo Ntsoma became the first woman recipient of the Mohamed Amin Award, the CNN African Journalist of the Year Photography Prize for her photo essay entitled, ‘Their World in Flames’. Over the years her career has also spanned to fine arts and celebrity photography.
