Nelson Gil Santovenia Mayol, born July 27, 1961, is a former professional baseball pitcher who was primarily a catcher in the Major Leagues from 1987 to 1993. He played college baseball for the University of Miami. He is currently the Lakeland Flying Tigers’ hitting coach.
Santovenia split time as catcher with Fitzgerald in the following two seasons. Santovenia caught Vince Coleman, of the St. Louis Cardinals, stealing on July 28, 1989. This ended Coleman’s Major League streak with 50 consecutive stolen bases. He was a part of 92 Montreal Expos games in 1988 with a.236 average and eight home runs. In 1989, he played in 97 Montreal Expos games with a.250 average. Santovenia’s batting average was below the mendoza line by 1990. In 59 games, he hit.190. In 1991, he split his time between Montreal and Indianapolis, where he hit.261 versus.250.
Santovenia made his major-league debut against the New York Mets on September 16, 1987. He was there to help Mike Fitzgerald, the regular catcher, catch the ninth inning. His second and final appearance of 1987 against the Philadelphia Phillies came two days later, when he was called up as a pinch-hitter and got his only at bat of the season.

Santovenia graduated from high school at Miami Southridge High in 1979. After graduating, Santovenia was drafted by Philadelphia Phillies in 29th round of 1979 amateur draft. However, he did not sign with them. Santovenia was a college baseball player at Miami Dade College. He then transferred to the University of Miami. He played college summer baseball for the Orleans Cardinals in the Cape Cod Baseball League in 1980. The Montreal Expos drafted him in the third round of 1981 Major League Baseball Draft. However, he did not sign with them. Santovenia, in his first year at Miami was a member the 1982 Miami Hurricanes baseball champion team. Wichita State University beat Miami 9-3 in the final game of 1982 College World Series. Santovenia was selected to the all-tournament squad for his participation in the series. His playing earned him the 19th round draft pick by the Expos.
Santovenia signed with the Expos and played his first season in West Palm Beach Expos. He was playing alongside Andres Galarraga, who would become a future star. In 1982, he played in West Palm Beach 40 times. He also spent the entire 1983 season with Memphis Chicks. He spent 1984 with the Jacksonville Suns. The following two seasons were split between the AAA-level Suns (AA) and the AAA-level Indianapolis Indians (AA). Santovenia played 117 games for the Suns during the 1987 season. His batting average was.279 and he hit 19 home runs. He also had a slugging rate of.467.
On December 9, 1991, Santovenia was released by the Montreal Expos, and on February 3, 1992, he signed as a free agent with the Chicago White Sox. He played in two games for the White Sox and played 91 games with the Vancouver Canadians in 1992, then was released. He signed with the Kansas City Royals as a free agent on December 10, 1992. Santovenia spent most of the season with the Omaha Royals, and spent four games with Kansas City in 1993, his final major league appearance coming on October 2, 1993. After another season with Omaha, where he hit .164 in 45 games, he retired.
