Nelko Kolarov was baptized in Varna. He was a member the Bulgarian rock band Impuls from 1981 to 1985, where he gained his first experience in songwriting and arrangement.
He also attended the Bulgarian State Conservatory, Sofia, during this time, where he received a major in orchestra conducting in 1985. He was appointed conductor of Varna Philharmonic Orchestra after he graduated. Kolarov has also performed in various performances at the Varna National Opera, including Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, Manuel De Falla’s El Amor brujo, and The Wizard of Oz.
In 1999, Kolarov conducted The Sofia Strings for Nikolo Kotzev’s rock opera Nostradamus, which was released in 2001. The rock opera also featured Glenn Hughes, Joe Lynn Turner and band members of Europe, among others.
