Neil Smillie, born Barnsley on 19 July 1958, is an English former professional soccer player and manager. He was a player for many clubs. His greatest achievement was his appearance in the 1983 FA Cup Final for Brighton & Hove Albion.
Smillie was appointed youth coach at Wycombe Wanderers in 1995 after Gillingham was taken over by new owners. In 1996, he was briefly the caretaker manager, but in 1998 he was appointed to the permanent job. The following year, he was fired.
Smillie was appointed player-coach by Mike Flanagan, Gillingham’s new manager in 1993. In 1995 Gillingham was placed into administration. The receivers fired Flanagan, making Smillie the manager.

Neil Smillie was born to Ron Smillie (former Barnsley and Lincoln City player), and began his career at Crystal Palace. He spent seven years there, including a spell on loan with Brentford. He also played two summers for the North American Soccer League’s Memphis Rogues. He was sold to Brighton & Hove Albion in 1982. He played in the 1983 FA Cup Final with that club. Brighton held Manchester United to a draw of 2-2 before losing in a replay.
Smillie, who was paid PS100,000.00, moved to Watford in 1985. However, his time at Vicarage Road proved unsuccessful with just 16 appearances for the first team over three years. He moved to Reading in 1988. He moved to Brentford a year later. There he played for the first team for five years, making over 170 appearances.
