He was a journalist who worked at Hot Press, an Irish music magazine, from 1978 to 1980. After a failed music career, he returned to journalism in early 1990s and became a contributing editor for British GQ (1991-1996). Since 1996, he has been the Daily Telegraph’s chief rock critic. McCormick was the songwriter and singer in a number of unsigned bands, including Frankie Corpse (1978), The Undertakers (1978-79), and The Modulators (1978-1979). Yeah!Yeah! (1980-83) & Shook Up! (1985-88). Under the pseudonym of The Ghost Who Moves, he released Mortal Coil in 2004. His song “Harm’s Way” is featured on the album Songs Inspired By The Passion of the Christ (2004). McCormick wrote in The Daily Telegraph that McCormick should “probably quit while I am ahead”.
His memoir of an unsuccessful career in the music business, I Was Bono’s Doppelgänger (retitled Killing Bono in the US) in 2004. Elton John called it “the best book I have ever read about trying to make it in the music business.” It has been translated into several languages. A 2011 film of Killing Bono starred Ben Barnes as McCormick and Martin McCann as Bono.
