He attended Westcliff High School for Boys before moving on to Warwick University in 1989, where he received a degree as a Management Science major.

Neal Martin, a wine critic and author, is based in the UK. Vinous reviews wines from Bordeaux, Burgundy and South Africa. Martin was the author of Pomerol in 2012, an award-winning book that is widely recognized as the definitive guide to one of Bordeaux’s most obscure appellations. It won the Andre Simon John Avery Award in 2013 and the Chairman’s Award at Louis Roederer Wine Writers Awards 2013.

Martin was a graduate of the University of London. He worked two years at Lloyd’s of London before moving to Tokyo in 1994 as an English teacher. He accepted a job in a Japanese wine export company in 1996.

He began writing a website called wine-journal.com in June 2003. It quickly gained over 100,000 visitors. Robert Parker approached him in 2006 to be a wine advocate reviewer. After three years of research, his first book, Pomerol, was published in 2012. The book is composed of three parts, totaling almost 600 pages. One part covers the history of Pomerol, while the other contains profiles of wineries alphabetically. Finally, the last part examines all Pomerol crus. Martin published the book because he was stubborn and did not want to compromise. I also felt that there were parts that an editor would remove. Martin is an international wine judge, serving as the Panel Chair at the International Wine Challenge in Australia, South Africa and Japan.
