The Pirates lost a heartbreaking 19-inning game against the Atlanta Braves on July 26. It ended with a controversial call in which Jerry Meals, home plate umpire, called Julio Lugo safe at his home. However, replays showed that Michael McKenry, catcher, had clearly tagged Lugo out. After rewatching the replay, Meals acknowledged that the call might have been wrong. The Pirates lost 15 of the next 18 games between July 27 and August 14 and lost 10 consecutive games. With a record 72-90, the Pirates finished the season 4th in the National League Central.

Good performances by Huntington acquisitions Charlie Morton and James McDonald as well as the signing of Kevin Correia, a new pitcher, were a major factor in the team’s success. Joel Hanrahan was a top-notch closer in the bullpen. Although the offense was struggling for much of the year Andrew McCutchen emerged the best young hitter in the game and the Pirates’ best hitter. McCutchen, Hanrahan and Correia were all selected in July to represent the National League at the 2011 All Star Game. The Pirates selected UCLA pitcher Gerrit Cole as the first overall pick in the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft.
On November 2, 2007, Huntington made clear that he was going to utilize some sabermetric techniques of player evaluation:
Within two weeks of assuming the Pirates GM position, Huntington made several decisive moves on October 5, 2007: field manager Jim Tracy was fired; the remaining coaching staff was given notice that their contracts would likely not be renewed; and the Senior Director of Player Development, the scouting director, and the Director of Baseball Operations were also let go. These moves cleared the decks to introduce a wholly fresh approach to scouting, player development, and field management in the Pirates organization.
