Raymond was the director for operations at the Satellite Sentinel Project. This program was sponsored by George Clooney and coordinated through Harvard Humanitarian Initiative. It used satellite imagery and other data to create reports about the security situation in Sudan. The Satellite Sentinel Project spotted images of mass graves in the Southern Kordofan, Sudan, where the Sudanese Arab military was targeting the black ethnicity. Raymond said that the Sudanese military had violated the Geneva Conventions when they captured the town of Abyei.
Raymond was the leader of Physicians for Human Rights’ investigation on torture by the United States government, and other governments in the War on Terror. He was responsible for the inquiry into the massacre at Dasht-i-Leili in northern Afghanistan. This investigation also included the discovery in 2002 of a mass grave. Raymond requested information under Freedom of Information Act 2008 from the United States Defense Department and State Department. The documents indicated that between 1500 and 2000 people were killed at Dasht-i-Leili.

Nathaniel Raymond, born November 11, 1977, is an American human right investigator who specializes in investigating war crimes including mass killings, torture, and other forms of violence. Raymond was the director of the anti-torture campaign for Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) and the use of satellite surveillance by Harvard Humanitarian Initiatives (HHI). Raymond supports intelligence being used by human rights groups as well as other non- governmental organisations.
He led an investigation into the role psychologists played during torture sessions and claimed that the American Psychological Association changed its ethics policy to allow psychologists to participate in investigations where torture is used. Raymond criticized the Central Intelligence Agency and United States Department of Defense for using torture and human experimentation to inflict suffering at Guantanamo bay and other black sites. Raymond stated that these acts were against the Geneva Conventions, United Nations Convention against Torture and the Nuremberg Code. He also supported the prosecution of CIA personnel and agents who participated in torture.
Raymond founded and currently directs Harvard’s Signal Program, which conducts research and teaching on the use of technology to document and prevent human rights violations. Raymond has advocated the use of human intelligence and satellite surveillance to investigate and prevent human rights abuses, but has also expressed concerns about the misapplication or abuse of that data. The Signal Program is developing guidelines for how human rights workers should interpret satellite data. Raymond has also stated that an ethics code should be created for the use of crisis mapping. For his work with satellite surveillance, Raymond was named a PopTech Social Innovation Fellow in 2013.
