Born in Launceston (Tasmania), Atkinson was a member of Riverside Olympic’s youth team before joining the NTC program at the Football Federation Tasmania. After a trial, Atkinson was invited to join the academy side Melbourne City in 2016. During the 2016-17 season, he played for the Melbourne City Reserves of the NPL Victoria. Atkinson started training with the Melbourne City’s first team towards the end of the 2016-17 seasons.
Atkinson was chosen to train with Australia U20 in January 2017.
