Tinkler was an apprentice at BHP’s Bayswater Open-Cut mine until he was fired or offered a redundancy package. During his time at the mine, he was often in debt and refused to pay his creditors. He started his own maintenance company for mine machinery at the age 26.
Football Federation Australia announced on 22 September 2010 that Tinkler purchased Newcastle Jets A-League Club from Con Constantine. Justin Newlan had advised him to do so. Tinkler was temporarily reserving the license. Justin Newlan advised him again that he should extend his ownership to 2020 on 2 October 2010.
On 31 March 2011 Tinkler assumed ownership of the Newcastle Knights rugby league club by a landslide vote of the eligible club members. The Knights signed Wayne Bennett to a four-year coaching contract with the club, starting in 2012.
In December 2012, the Australian Taxation Office filed court documents to wind up Tinkler’s Hunter Sports Group. The action came two weeks after two of Tinkler’s companies were placed into liquidation. Hunter Sports Group owed around A$2.7 million in unpaid taxes and was notified of this debt in September 2012.
A community day was held by the Newcastle Jets, where 10,000 people were allowed to attend for free in order to watch the match against Melbourne Heart on 31 Oct 2010. The club’s membership grew to more than 10,000. In addition, the Hunter Medical Research Institute was added as a sponsor.

Nathan Tinkler, born 1 February 1976, is an Australian mining magnate who also runs a business out of the Hunter Region in New South Wales. At 26 years old, he started his career as a miner apprentice in Hunter Valley, New South Wales. He then set up his own company. His wealth was largely derived from his investments in the mining sector, which he later lost most of.
In 2006, he borrowed A$500,000 to purchase the Middlemount coal mine in Central Queensland. It cost A$11.5million. He agreed to sell 70% Middlemount coal mine to Macarthur Coal in December 2007 for A$57million cash and a portion of Macarthur shares worth A$184million. Macarthur was then a target for a takeover and its share prices doubled. Tinkler bought his Macarthur shares from Macarthur for A$422million in May 2008. Tinkler was listed on the BRW Young Rich List in 2008, valued at A$441million. He was also the second- richest Australian man under 40 years old.
In July 2010, Tinkler floated the company Aston Resources with A$400 million worth of shares offered, valuing his holdings at A$600 million.
