Nathaniel James Speas (known as Nate James) was born 15 September 1979 in Lakenheath. In 2005, James released his first soul album Set the Tone. He won two MOBO nominations for Best Newcomer as well as Best R&B Artist. His debut release was “Set the Tone”. James has sold more than 1,000,000 albums, and has been airplayed in Japan and Europe. In 2006, he won the Festivalbar. In 2010 James formed the group SugaSmak! which consisted of Nate as the lead vocalist (now dubbed ‘SugaJack’) and Matt Gooderson of indie outfit Infadels (‘Clyma’). Boasting a new ElectroSoul sound, the duo’s debut single We Are was released through the small London independent “Better Get Records” on 22 November 2010.

James’ second album Kingdom Falls was recorded entirely out of profits from his debut album. The album features many tracks featuring a live orchestra and more studio-based productions than his first album Set The Tone. Kingdom Falls, the album’s title track, was inspired by James’s 2006 charity trip to Rwanda. He witnessed both joy and sorrow as he saw the country and its orphans recover from the atrocities of the 1994 genocide. Neal H Pogue, Outkast’s Grammy-winning collaborator, mixed the album in Los Angeles. It was first released in Japan, then in the UK and Italy. James was awarded Urban Music Awards Best Album (Kingdom Falls), and Best Neo-Soul artist in 2007.
