Walter was the director and founder of Women for Refugee Women, a charity that supports women seeking asylum. Women for Refugee Women produced Motherland in 2008, which Natasha Walter adapted from the experiences of children and women held in immigration detention. It was directed and performed by Juliet Stevenson at the Young Vic by Harriet Walter, Juliet Stevenson and others in 2008. Women for Refugee Women worked with other organizations to advocate for an end to detention of children for immigration purposes in Britain. This policy was announced by the government in 2010.

In October 2019, Natasha Walter was arrested for her actions in blocking a road in Extinction Rebellion’s ‘October Rebellion’ in London’s Trafalgar Square. She tweeted: “I was one of 100s arrested yesterday for drawing attention to the destruction of our beautiful planet.”
