Pyotr Katsyv (an official in the Russian state-owned railways) and his son Denis Katsyv are her clients. She defended them against a New York money laundering charge. Veselnitskaya was charged in the United States with obstruction-of-justice charges. She is accused of trying to stop the Justice Department investigation into money laundering charges against Katsyv.

Veselnitskaya later that June screened Andrei Nekrasov’s film at the Newseum, Washington, D.C., which was critical of Magnitsky. She was involved in the production of The Magnitsky Act: Behind the Scenes. According to RussiaTV5, which is a station whose owners are close to Vladimir Putin, she provided “the true proofs and records to testimony” to the film crew. The European Parliament rejected Magnitsky’s film as “pro-Russian propaganda” in April 2016.

In October 2015, Veselnitskaya traveled to Manhattan, with her clients, for a deposition in the money laundering case. After being told, at the end of the deposition, that the counterparty would be required to reimburse her for her expenses, she billed the U.S. government $50,000, for an $800 meal, eight grappas, and a $995-per-night room at the Plaza Hotel.

In February 2015, the Human Rights Accountability Global Initiative was created in Delaware. Rinat Akhmetshin, a naturalized U.S. citizen from Russia, who has worked as a Washington lobbyist since 1998, agreed to lobby for the foundation backed by Denis Katsyv. From 1986 to 1988, Akmetshin served in the Soviet Army, where he obtained the rank of sergeant and worked in a counterintelligence unit for the KGB. Veselnitskaya’s campaign included an unsuccessful attempt in Washington to repeal the Magnitsky Act and to “keep Mr. Magnitsky’s name off the law”.

Sergei Magnitsky was a tax accountant who claimed that Moscow law enforcement had stolen $230 million in tax rebates. He was sentenced to death. Magnitsky’s client Bill Browder secured the passage of the American Magnitsky Act in 2012. This imposed sanctions against the officials involved. Russian President Vladimir Putin responded by passing the Dima Yakovlev Law, which prohibits Americans from adopting Russian children.
