Natalia Vitalyevna Shaposhnikova, Russian: Natal’ia Vital’evna Shaposhnikova – born 24 June 1961 in Rostov–on-Don, married name Natalia Sout – is a Soviet gymnast and two-time Olympic champion. She was also an Honoured Master for Sports of the USSR. Her unique, risky and expressive choreography on floor and balance beam were her trademark.

Shaposhnikova is married to Pavel Sout, who was a gold medalist at the 1981 World Championships in men’s gymnastics. She is currently a coach at Gymnastika Woodland Park, New Jersey.

Shaposhnikova invented a complex transition skill on the uneven bars—a clear hip circle on the low bar with flight backward to the high bar—and it is named after her in the Code of Points. The skill, sometimes referred to colloquially as the “Shaposh”, is still widely performed today; it is credited as a D element in the 2013–16 Code of Points.

She was a part of the Soviet team’s 1980 Olympics gold medal winning and an individual vault gold medal. She won bronze medals in floor and beam and was just 0.05 away from a medal in all-around.

Shaposhnikova was trained at Dynamo Rostov-on Don under the Honoured Trainer for the USSR Vladislav Rastorotsky. He also trained her compatriots Ludmilla Turischeva and Natalia Yurchenko. In the 1970s and 1980s she was one of the most skilled gymnasts on vault. Her uniqueness and difficulty, particularly her one-armed beam handstands, was what made her a well-known gymnast. She performed one of the first floor triple twists at the 1979 European Championships. Her opening floor tumbling pass at the 1980 Olympic Games was a 1.5-twisting layout that immediately turned into a roundoff backhandspring double pike.

Shaposhnikova was close to winning gold in beam at the 1978 World Championships. She entered the final with a slight advantage over Nadia Comaneci from Romania. Peter Shilston, in an April 1980 profile in British Gymnast magazine, wrote that there was a strong partisan section in the audience who wanted Comaneci to win in order to make up for her past poor performances. Natasha, who needed a 9.8 score to win the gold, was met with a hostile reception. She made several mistakes that were all mocked and fell from first to eighth place. Shilston described the loss as “probably the most saddest experience in Natasha’s entire life.”

Since the 1990s, other gymnasts have developed variations of the Shaposhnikova, including Americans Amy Chow (who performed the skill with a stalder entry instead of a clear hip) and Kristen Maloney (toe-on entry); Russians Viktoria Komova (inbar stalder entry) and Svetlana Khorkina (Shaposhnikova with a half turn during the transition between the bars); Laura van Leeuwen of the Netherlands (toe-on entry plus a half turn); and Elisabeth Seitz of Germany (toe-on entry with a full turn during the transition).
