Tommy Prim is one of the most popular and richest Sport Cyclist who was born on July 29, 1955 in Svenljunga, Västra Götaland, Sweden. Tommy Prim (born 29 July 1955) is a retired Swedish professional cyclist who raced for the Italian Bianchi team from the years 1980 and 1986. In 1983, he became the first Scandinavian cyclist to win a race of a century by winning Paris-Brussels. Other career highlights include winning Tirreno Adriatico and the Tour de Romandie as well as finishing second during the Giro d’Italia in 1981 and 1982.

Prim was a participant in his 2001 Giro d’Italia in top form after winning the Tour de Romandie just prior to the Italian race. He finished in the second place in front of Giovanni Battaglin, many observers believed the Prim might have been able to win the Giro had his Bianchi team had supported only him and not had three team captains (Italians Silvano Contini and Giambattista Baronchelli were the other). In 1982, Prim was runner-up time in the Giro and was beaten by the shrewd and tactical Bernard Hinault. In 1983, he entered the Giro as the sole team captain for Bianchi and the race started off with a bang when he wore the pink leader’s jersey following the initial stage time trial. However his performance on the mountain was atypically bad and he finished with a disappointing 15th position overall. In September 1983, he won the Paris-Brussels race, at the time still considered to be an “Classic” race, he was first clear after an early break, which did not stop for 280 km and he snuck away from his breakaway teammates at the top of the Alsemberg climb just prior to the finish line and was in the clear to be the first Scandinavian racer to win the race that is considered to be a classic.

After his retirement from cycle racing, Tommy opened a bike shop back in his native Sweden, he then moved to other employment working for a mail order firm, a saw mill and then a salmon smokery. In 2000, Tommy was offered the chance to become team manager at the small UCI registered Team Crescent, a Swedish pro squad which was to promote Swedish under 23 riders. He has had some success in bringing through talented riders as the team evolved from Team Crescent to Bianchi Scandinavia to Bianchi Nordic. The team folded at the end of the 2004 season.

Prim’s impact was immediate as a professional during his debut season in 1980. He placed seventh in the initial year Tour of Sardinia and was part of the Bianchi team which won the team time trial at Paris-Nice. His good form allowed him to participate at the Giro d’Italia where he took an entire stage to Teramo and finished fourth overall, and winning the young riders’ jersey. He was disqualified for winning the stage in Sorrento after he was able to ride Italian athlete Giovanni Mantovani into the barriers. In the following season, he took home the Italian one-day race called named the Coppa Agostoni.

He was crowned Swedish Junior champion in 1972 As an amateur, the athlete had been Swedish champion both in 1979 , as also the Scandinavian champion for amateurs between the years 1975 and 1976. Prim was a part of the classification for under 22 riders in the Tour of Britain in 1976 which was his first time abroad as part of Sweden’s Swedish nation’s team. He was a participant in the team time trial during the 1976 Summer Olympics.

In 1978 and 1979, Prim put up top-quality performances in the highly regarded Italian race called Settimana Bergamasca, which has been won by many of the Worlds best riders prior to when they became professional. Prim’s achievements during the Bergamasca race attracted the attention of top teams and, at the close of 1979, Prim became a professional in the Italian Bianchi-Piaggio team and was made simpler by having other fellow Scandinavians Knut Knudsen as well as Alf Segersall on the team. The manager of his team would be the master tactician Giancarlo Ferretti.

1984 promised great things when Prim won the Tirreno–Adriatico stage race in Italy but his season was ruined when he crashed a few days before the Giro. 1985 saw the team renamed as Sammontana-Bianchi, with a new manager Wladimiro Bortolozzi, Moreno Argentin was brought in to be joint team leader with Tommy. Prim finished that year’s Giro in fourth place behind three of the cycling world superstars, Bernard Hinault, Francesco Moser and Greg LeMond. 1986 saw Prim ride a disappointing Giro d’Italia when he finished 21st overall, this prompted his team to say they would not ride the Tour of Sweden which they had always done since its reintroduction in 1982. Tommy’s reaction to this was to announce his retirement from cycling midway through the 1986 season at the young age of 31, he was feeling tired and felt he could no longer give it 100%.
