Nasim Ali is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on February 7, 1969 in Sylhet Sadar Upazila, Sylhet, Bangladesh. Nasim Ali “Nash”, OBE (Bengali, naasim aalii – born 7 February 1969), is a British Labour Party politician and councillor for Regent’s Park. He was also a former Cabinet Member for Young People in Camden Council, and former Mayor of Camden. At 34 years old, he was elected as Mayor of Camden. He also became the UK’s youngest mayor and the first Bangladeshi-born and first Muslim mayor.
Ali is a Labour Party member since May 1993. Sitar, Ali’s elder brother, encouraged him to run for the council. In May 2002, Ali was elected as a councillor in the Regent’s Park Ward. At 34 years old, Ali was elected Mayor of Camden. He is also the youngest mayor of the UK and the first Bangladeshi- and first Muslim mayor. Harriet Garland succeeded him the next year. He was elected Executive Member for Community Engagement in May 2004. Ali was also the first Bangladeshi Executive member and the first Bangladeshi Leader in the Labour Group or Camden Council.
In 1995, he joined the King’s Cross Brunswick Neighbourhood Association charity and has been Executive Director since January 2001. Since 2002, he been councillor for Regent’s Park ward, with a focus on diverting young people away from crime and conflict.
While working as an assistant in a clothes shop in Kentish Town, Ali’s manager advised him to better himself. Ali moved on to work for British Telecom, which is where he acquired his nickname “Nash”. In 1995, he left British Telecom and joined King’s Cross Brunswick Neighbourhood Association as a trainee youth worker. Ali acquired his distance-learning degree from the YMCA George Williams College while working full-time.
Ali and his family joined the “occupation” at the Town Hall in November 1984 after the death of a family from Bangladesh in a Westminster bed-and breakfast. Camden Law Centre partnered with Ali to create Camden Monitoring Project, which provided safe transportation for Bangladeshi men who were being attacked by skinheads returning from work five years later. His father was a chef, and his younger brother ran a pizza shop.

Ali was born in Islampur in Shah Paran Thana in Sylhet District in East Pakistan (now Bangladesh). He arrived in the United Kingdom in 1976 at seven years old. He was raised on the Regent’s Park Estate. He was educated at South Camden Community School and Netley Primary School. He graduated with an O-level in Art. Bahar Ali and Baharful Nessa are Ali’s parents. Sitar Ali is his elder brother and Azad Ali is his younger brother. Two younger sisters are Bina Begum (Amina Begum) and Azad Ali (Zad Ali).
Ali has been involved in the Regent’s Park Estate community since the 1980s. He has been volunteering since he was 14 years old. He established the Camden Monitoring Group in 1989 to fight racial harassment. He was also seconded to Camden Youth Service in 1989, where he became a volunteer for the community as well as the social welfare charity Bengali Workers Association. He also enrolled at Kingway College, now known as Westminster Kingsway College. That year, he received B grades in mathematics and English language.
In August 1994, he established Camden United Project to unite conflicting young people from white and Asian communities together in the borough, through their common interest in football, diverting them away from racism, crime and conflict.

He was the Cabinet Member for Community Safety following the London bombings on 7 July 2005. He was also an advisor to the Metropolitan Police Service and The Prince’s Trust, and a Governor for Westminster Kingsway College. and school governor of South Camden Community School now known as Regent High School from 1998 to 2006 and Netley Primary School from 2006 to 2011.
