Napoleon Ardel McCallum, born October 6, 1963, is an American former professional and college football player. He was a running back for the National Football League (NFL), for six seasons between the 1980s-90s. McCallum played college football in the United States. McCallum played college football for the U.S. Naval Academy and then played professional football for the Los Angeles Raiders, NFL. He is a member of College Football Hall of Fame.
McCallum’s career was over before it began on September 5, 1994 when he was thrown to the ground by Ken Norton Jr., a 49ers linebacker. McCallum and Norton fell, McCallum’s left leg was stuck in the ground, causing a terrible dislocation. While McCallum was unconscious, Norton lay still under McCallum’s feet for several minutes, while McCallum’s athletic trainers looked after McCallum.
McCallum played a significant role in the Oakland Raiders relocation to Las Vegas by setting up a meeting in 2015 between Raiders owner Mark Davis and various officials in Las Vegas after approaching Davis about moving the team to Las Vegas before a Broncos-Raiders game on November 9, 2014 in Oakland. McCallum was the first to suggest meeting with UNLV about the idea. Previously, Las Vegas officials, notably Mayor Carolyn Goodman, had suggested building a stadium near Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He later set up a meeting between Davis and his boss at Las Vegas Sands Sheldon Adelson who would later help Davis secure the public money needed to build Allegiant Stadium.
During his time at Navy, he was a two-time consensus All-American and set an NCAA record with 7,172 career all-purpose yards. He was also the career rushing leader at Navy with 4,179 yards until that record was broken by Keenan Reynolds in 2015. He was a member of the Navy Midshipmen football team that played in the Army-Navy game at the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena, California in 1983. He scored two touchdowns in Navy’s 48–13 victory.
McCallum was assigned by the Navy to USS California (CGN-36) in 1987. He was home-ported in Alameda and sailing in the Indian Ocean at the time. McCallum believes that McCallum was prevented from returning to the NFL because of the attention that he received playing for the Raiders. McCallum returned to the Raiders after he had completed his Navy service until 1990. McCallum was only able to play on special teams and as a specialty back for short yards. Marcus Allen was the dominant running back of the time. He ran for three touchdowns in the wild-card win over the Denver Broncos in 1993.

McCallum graduated in December 1985 and remained at the academy to work as a recruiter. McCallum was chosen in the 1986 USFL Draft in May by the Baltimore Stars in third round. This followed a trade with the San Antonio Gunslingers the year before. McCallum was assigned by the Navy to USS Peleliu LHA-5 in 1986, where he served as a supply officer. McCallum was an active duty member of the Los Angeles Raiders that year. Outside employment is not prohibited by the military. McCallum rushed to reach his NFL record of 536 yards and split playing time with Marcus Allen.
McCallum studied computer science at the Naval Academy. He held 16 records in football there as of 1986. In 2003, he was inducted into College Football Hall of Fame.
McCallum moved to Henderson, Nevada in 1996 and started a computer graphics business, Pro Digital Graphics. He is also an avid golfer. He later sold the business and is currently director of community development for the Las Vegas Sands Corp. He and his wife Yvonne have four daughters.
